Intro

In the book, B is for Beer by Tom Robbins, we are taken through a fanatastic history of beer and it's place in our culture. It is described to have both nutritional and magical properties.

While it's magical properties might be debated, I do enjoy drinking beer with meals and with friends. And everyday, there are more and more brands and varieties of beer avaialble. In my experience, my mood and food pairing dictate my enjoyment of a beer, so my tastes are always changing.

I typically enjoy the very hoppy IPA (India Pale Ale) which get their name from the extra hops that were used in making the variety of beer, which was intended to help perserve the beer for longer for shipping from England to India. My favorite IPA's have a very 'piney' flavor. I also enjoy Pale Ales, which are less bitter or hoppy, but still very full bodied.

On hot days, a cold pilsner or lager hits the spot. And for dessert or hot meals on cold days, a stout or porter may be just what is needed. Here are some of my favorites.

My Favorite Beers

Deschutes Mirror Pond

Bend, OR - This pale ale always hits the spot for me. At 5.0% ABV, it can be a solo refreshment in the afternoon, or paired with any meal, it has the perfect balance of sweet and bitter to provide a complex but easy to drink beer. I love that they have gone back to the original twilight purple color can design.

Lagunitas IPA

Peteluma, CA - The Lagunitas India Pale Ale has 6.2% ABV and is avaialble in more and more markets across the US and the world thanks to the owners being Heineken. Lagunitas IPA has a very piney hop profile making this on the sweeter side in my opinion.

Ninkasi Total Domination IPA

Eugene, OR - The Total Domination IPA is Ninkasi's flagship Northwest IPA, among a varied lineup of delicious beers of different styles. With a 6.7% ABV, this is on the stronger end of the IPA scale and shows up with strong but slightly sweet flavors I enjoy. Fun Fact: I found the Ninkasi sign in the picture in a bar in Dublin, Ireland.

Rogue Dead Guy Ale

Newport, OR - This intimidatingly named beer is one of Rogue's more popular beers but continues the brewery's tradition of bringing unique and mature flavors to their beers. Dead Guy is another strong beer at 6.8% ABV and is a maibock style that isn't typicaly found.

Sunriver Vicious Mosquito IPA

Sunriver, OR - Sunriver Brewing is a relativly new brewer founded in the resort town of Sunriver, OR. In a world filled with IPAs, they have brought a welcome flavor profile to the market with their flagship West Coast IPA, Vicious Mosquito. (Photo of my son at the Deschutes River bridge in Sunriver, OR, until I can get a proper picture of the beer.)

Guinness Draught

Dublin, Ireland - Guinness is a well know beer brand, and I would reccommend that anyone who has a chance to drink a freshly poured Guinness from a nitrogen tap, preferably by a bartender trained in the proper technique. Guinness is a Stout beer with 4.2% ABV, and has a light and creamy texture dispite its dark color.

Ballast Point Sculpin IPA

San Diego, CA - Ballast Point was a small craft brewery with limited distribution on the west coast. They were acquired by the beer conglomerate, Constellation Brands, in 2015, but then the brand was sold to a smaller brewery out of Chicago, Kings & Convicts. A strange, but welcome move to see. This beer is a delicious, very smooth, IPA with lots of flavor and 7% ABV, but I think the sweet smooth taste is easy to drink, even for those new to IPAs. What can be offensive however, is the price. A six pack runs $15 many places, including here in Texas. But it makes the list because I think it might be worth the price, even if it is a treat saved for special occasions.
